FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Do I need ItemsAdder, Nexo, Oraxen, or another pack plugin?
No. SkinEngine is a resource pack engine that automatically builds its own resource pack, in all cases.
However, if you already use ItemsAdder, Nexo, Oraxen, or any other plugin, SkinEngine is built to merge into them:
This disables SkinEngine's own pack hosting and lets the other plugin handle the resource pack SkinEngine built.
What item types are supported right now?
These categories are currently supported:
- swords
- maces
- tridents
- axes
- pickaxes
- shovels
- hoes
- spears
- bows
- crossbows
- shields
- fishing rods
- elytras
- helmets
- chestplates
- leggings
- boots
Why are my skins not showing?
Check these first:
- you reloaded the plugin with
/se reloadafter config changes - you ran
/se zipafter resource pack content changes - the generated pack is actually being delivered
- the player accepted the pack
- the item category and material are supported by that skin file
- the item is not blocked by
settings.prevent-skins.* - there are no console warnings that may explain what went wrong

Why is a skin locked?
SkinEngine generates per-skin permissions in this format:
skinengine.skins.<pack_id>.<skin_id>
If the player does not have the permission, the skin can show as unavailable or fail to apply.
See the Permissions page to learn how to unlock specific skins for players, or unlock all skins (or all skins from specific packs).
In the skin selection menu, players can use the filter button to switch between all, unlocked, and locked skins.
Can SkinEngine exclude custom items from other plugins?
Yes. SkinEngine includes custom-item detection for ItemsAdder, Oraxen, Nexo, and CraftEngine:
For other plugins or your own item markers, use:
[!TIP] You can use all three item protection options to create your own complex systems. You can combine custom model data, regex and literal NBT checks with direct ItemsAdder, Oraxen, Nexo and CraftEngine hooks for the best result.
[!INFO]
/se nbtshows the held item's saved data and helps you choose a specificblocked-nbtrule.
Does SkinEngine support PlaceholderAPI?
Yes. PlaceholderAPI is used in:
- translated messages
- translated GUI text
- SkinEngine placeholder expansion
SkinEngine also registers its own PlaceholderAPI expansion under %se_*%.
You can learn more at the Placeholders page.
Does SkinEngine work without internet access?
No. Your server host needs outbound access for:
- license validation
- update checks
- runtime dependency downloads handled by the server environment
If you self-host the generated pack, players also need access to your configured pack URL.
[!INFO] License checks are guarded so that your plugin will continue working even if our license backend is offline for any reason.
Does SkinEngine support Folia?
Not yet. We are actively working on Folia support, but due to complexity of the plugin it may take some time.
What server software is supported?
SkinEngine currently supports Paper and its forks, such as Purpur and other Paper-based forks. Read more about Folia support above. Spigot, Bukkit and older software is not supported!
[!WARNING] We can't guarantee that SkinEngine will work on custom, private or niche forks, regardless if they're Paper-based or not.
